Intel's designers did a great job using a brilliant quad width cache to keep PIII performance competitive, their process engineers, wherever given the chance, implemented a competitive .18 process. But the clowns in upper management decided to leave half the company at .25 for 2000! They pissed away billions on fluff (and Rambus!) instead of financing every bit of capacity upgrades that could be stuffed into their FABs. Meanwhile, the money losing, near bankrupt, AMD converted their entire existing capacity to .18 AND built a .18/.13 COPPER FAB. And Intel knew exactly what AMD was doing. What a screwup by Barrett, Ottelini, whoever really calls the strategic shots over there. Regards, Dan
