I have always thought a big part of the consideration of laser surgery success would reside in the talents of the doctors. You are correct about the eye, and people's sensitivity about who treats this organ.
Then it came to me that people who have the surgery are really dealing with a stranger. More often then not, the surgeon who is doing this procedure is not the eye doctor who treats the patient in an ongoing relationship. Most eye doctors are not surgeons. The role of the doctor's skill will lessen over time replaced by slick promotion.
Even now, LCAV is using its LasixPlus business model because they think they can establish BRAND identification, as opposed to identification with any one doctor. There are LVC's in shopping malls that allow people on the outside to see the surgery in progress.
The argument is that the "LVC" can do it better because they do "thousands" of operations, and have the ultimate training and experience in their internal methods.
Not only can they do it better, but they can do it "cheaper" because they are set up to handle volume.
I'm seeing improvements in technology also. The transition to LASIK from PRK, and now the computer controlled instrumentations all lean towards less skill and more mechanical control of the surgery.
As for the evaluation of VISX, eventually earnings will tell the story. This company is making big-time money.
