I'm not sure I'm following all of your figures, but I think you're confusing revenues and earnings. (Last year's $422 in net income, was followed by a loss of $122 million in the 10/31 quarter).

According to Market Guide, CMGI sells at 96 times sales; MSFT at 26 times sales. CMGI sells at 8 times book value, MSFT trades at 17 times book value. CMGI may have $600 million in revenue this year; MSFT will likely well exceed $20 billion in sales. MSFT has a long profit history; CMGI's profits are erratic due to the nature of its business.

There are many problems comparing what is basically a software company (albeit one with some pretty substantial venture investments), with a hybrid venture/operating company like CMGI.

CMGI bounces as it does because there are no easy valuation metrics. I think it basically comes down to how much faith you have in the Internet business model and Weatherell & Co.
