I find it amusing that Americans grumble about the "world government" or "new world order" - as if either exists - as a mob of unruly third-worlders out to impose leveling regulations on the US. At the same time, people in the third world are convinced that the same institutions are a device created by first-world monopoly capitalists to pry open their borders and force them to sell their countries to the evil neocolonial exploiters.

My gut reaction is that anyone taking that much flack from opposite sides is probably doing something right, but I could be wrong.

The idea of a Pax Americana does not appeal to me at all, though I suppose any sort of Pax is better than the opposite.
