Michael,
Re tobacco vs. third-world pillagers:

People who buy cigarettes do so voluntarily (if fatally). People who live in repressive third-world countries do not have a lot of options. Especially when a rich international conglomerate bribes officials, crushes labor unions, despoils the environment, and hires murderous goons (often government troops) to suppress dissent.

Unfortunately, the big oils have been more willing than most to throw their financial weight around in poor countries. Shell, in particular, is personally responsible for the murder/execution of Nigerian democrats. I've admired your principles in staying away from socially deplorable companies. You might want to delve a bit into UCL's record. If they are as bad as suggested, there are plenty of other ways to make money.
Thanks,
/Kit
