Durable-Goods Orders Soar 4.1%
Dow Jones Newswires

WASHINGTON -- U.S. factories registered a huge surge in the number of orders for durable goods the final month of last year, as a sharp pick-up in demand for aircraft and parts helped cover weakness in industrial equipment and metals.

The Commerce Department said total orders booked jumped a much sharper-than-expected 4.1% in December, following a strong 1.0% increase in November and helping the overall year data post an 7.1% gain -- the sharpest increase in two years. The increased demand for durable goods came from higher orders for aircraft and electronic equipment.

Economists surveyed by Thomson Global Markets expected orders to gain 0.8%.
Continued demand for big-ticket items could weigh on investors who are concerned that the Federal Reserve could be inclined toward aggressive interest-rate increases to slow the economy.
