E Ink : The most interesting private company that we know of reports today that it has received an additional $37 million in venture funding. This company, which is likely to be one of the biggest high tech IPOs of the year when it finally comes to market, has the opportunity to completely revolutionize the way you "read" information. The E Ink system, which Briefing.com first wrote about back on October 15, 1998 is "programmable ink on paper." E Ink Corporation has developed an ink for paper applications which can be electronically controlled, while on the paper. In essence, the ink becomes the virtual equivalent of a computer screen. The ink resides on the paper in the form of individual tiny plastic particles. Each particle is bipolar, with a plus and a negatively charged side. Plus sides are colored black, negative sides are white. The particles are applied to paper in a thin film of clear "paint." When a discrete charge is applied to the particle, the particle rotates towards it, and displays the opposite charge, and therefore, the appropriate color. Because a particle is uniquely addressable, the total image on the paper can be controlled by software. Furthermore, it is reprogrammable. When this technology makes it to the market, it disrupts a lot of existing businesses. Publishing is just the first obvious example. But it also means that monitors could migrate. Your means of accessing the net might change. How about your own customized "paper" printed each morning? It takes the best of old and the new world and blends them. The potential for E Ink is simply incredible, and while it is still a private company, any investor in the new world order of the internet and broadband and wireless transmission of data should take the eventual advent of E Ink into consideration. Exactly how E Ink will work its way into the world isn't clear, but it is clear that E Ink, with virtually no competitors, should be on the radar screen of every investor interested in the future.
