Here's another potential directory application for Novell

Managing long distance, regional calling, and local service customer changes.

At present if I want to switch my regional and long distance service from one telecom to another, I have to do it over the telephone in several calls. I then depend upon the new telecom to contact the local telephone company with the account service changes and yet a third company that verifies my requested change.

Much falls between the cracks. Since all of the telecoms have been farming these services out, the FCC has been inundated with slamming complaints. Many of these complaints are due to putting too many people into the mix. (For example imagine changing only one of your lines to a new service and finding the change didn't go through because the verifier thought you wanted both lines changed. Go back to being on hold for an hour.)

Solution, give each local telephone user an online account to manage long distance and regional calling plan changes from. Allow the customer to go to his/her computer to switch services, add services and manage his/her account. (Try looking at AT&T's online system for some ideas about account management.)

By Integrating the operation of account service changes with the local telephone service and the long distance and regional carrier using Novell's directory technology for managing customer accounts many levels of customer satisfaction and efficiency would result.

Savings to the telecoms: All of those calls and the paperwork --- especially the bad will that comes from using third parties to initiate account changes.

I can see a call say to MCI to switch from AT&T where they walk you through the process online with the end result that the local company gets an immediate notification because of the account management capabilities. The difference being that you initiate the change to your account directly rather than the outside long distance company and you verify the changes yourself ratehr than an outside verification company.

Savings to consumer: Ever had all of your calls billed at a higher rate from a telecom that you didn't think was still handling your long distance because of a paperwork screw-up? Ever heard what that consumer has to say on the line to one of your sales reps when this happens?

Is this another application of digitalme?

Could be a Novell business opportunity?
