Hi Frank, An article in Feb. issue of Red Herring raises the
question of whether TCP/IP becomes a chokepoint for packet delivery.

"At the heart of the problem is the underlying mechanism used by TCP/IP to pass packets across networks. Servers will only permit a specific number of IP packets at any one time to be "in flight" or in transit across the network. That permits the server to wait for an acknowledgement packet from the destination server, which insures that the data (or packets) have arrived at their intended destination. If the acknowledgement is not received, the sending server retransmits those packets."

The author (Bob Packer) suggests the solution is software at the edge of the network to sift and select data so it will be handled efficiently to the locations where it is needed.

Is there a need for more intelligent routers at the edge? Is this need being met? If so, by whom?
