The new standard, "Short Message Service (SMS) for Spread Spectrum Systems" is primarily designed for TDMA systems operating in the United States. TIA/EIA-637-A The actual (nonpublished) standard lists those specifications underwhich companies may overlay a TDMA system with i-mode type specifications. IDC is among the IPR holders for data overlay on TDMA systems. It is important as NTT is proposing to bring it's "i-mode" type technology to the U.S. This particular standards document amends an earlier document and specifies the conditions under which SMS can be deployed to the US market.
