Mark,

Re: Smart Objects - Wireless Objects (watches, pens, et al)

<< none of these shapes will take a traditional SIM. Is there a chance that we'll see new size variations perhaps like a Smart Media card for a digital camera? >>

Good point. Traditional SIM's (dimensions specified for GSM by ETSI SMG9 standards) come in 2 specified form factors today:

1. ID-1 format - is the same size as the credit cards in your wallet (specified by ISO-7610 specifications for financial transaction cards).

2. Plug-in format (25mm x 15mm) is considerably smaller than the ID-1 format (but is actually punched or snapped out of the full size card body). It usually inserts inside a trap door in the handset. It is depicted here partially removed from the handset:

This plug-in format is still too small for the type of smart wireless object you are conceptualizing. The latest draft specifications for a 3G SIM (USIM) I have seen, speak to the issue this way:

>> 8.1 Dimensions
The ID-1 and Plug-in format used for the GSM SIM shall be adopted. A third format, smaller than the Plug-in format, is for further study. If a new format is defined, a means shall be specified in order to prevent an incorrect insertion of the card into the ME <<

So all things are possible (maybe). <g>
