MYSTIC, CT, January 28, 2000 ? USA Video Interactive (OTC BB: USVO; CDNX: US; www.usvo.com and Connaissance Media Inc. announced today that they have established a partnership to bring Internet and video technology to the one billion K-12 students in the United States, Latin America, Africa and Asia where there are not enough trained teachers and where there is not access to the Internet via traditional means.
CMI's patented technology for delivering content in standard website form via infrastructures ranging from broadcast to traditional Internet, combined with USA Video Interactive?s patented video and Wavelet compression technologies, provide a unique and complete end-to-end solution for business and education.
CMI?s patented "Broadcast+" technology creates "virtual interactivity," which, when delivered from satellites through set-top boxes and TVs, gives the appearance of browsing the web without the need for a hard-wired or wireless return channel. CMI?s technologies can be applied where bi-directional wired and wireless data communications network infrastructures are not available and make it possible to provide education and training to people in developing areas, thus creating equity of access for the first time ever. The CMI "Broadcast+" technology reduces the complexity and cost while increasing the availability of educational Web content to the schools. In addition, the companies will explore ways to deploy this solution over digital broadcast satellite in the early stages of deployment.
"This combination of USA Video Interactive?s Wavelet video streaming with CMI's set-top box delivery orientation is ideal for curriculum content delivery for K-12 in web-site ready form, where equity access is an issue," said Daniel Abensour, Ph.D., Chief Executive Officer of CMI. "Geographically remote and underprivileged communities will finally have access to web-ready educational content. I am particularly pleased to be part of a solution that offers the first real hope for access to developing nations as well."
As part of the relationship, both companies will work together to explore the delivery of future application services first in the United States and Puerto Rico and eventually to other developing nations. "We are pleased to offer these combined technologies in our own country and we are convinced that this represents the best way to address the ?digital divide? in our own under-served communities," said Edwin Molina, President of USA Video Interactive.
"The strategic relationship between USVO and CMI creates a new world of possibilities for educating the world's poorest and most remote populations. It is exactly the right kind of technology direction that is needed at this time in history," said Mr. Molina. "This is not only a new content delivery strategy that will create new market opportunities for communications, hardware, software and content publishing, but most important, it will create new opportunities for people to access knowledge and information."
USA Video Interactive provides enhanced content and video capabilities in the education and training arenas, and, by partnering with CMI, opens a new market which CMI estimates at $20 billion for hardware (set-top boxes, televisions, servers and related equipment) as well as additional revenue streams for curriculum development, licensing, software development, and other related items.
According to CMI?s research, there are more than one billion K-12 students in developing countries around the world, and education for these students is a high priority in these countries. Typically the population in these countries is very young and there are not enough skilled instructors to train their students and not enough money to train additional instructors. Of the new automated instruction systems, the ones based on Internet access and delivery are considered the most promising, but typically they cannot be utilized because the required telecommunications and data communication networks are missing. The combination of CMI's data access technology with USA Video Interactive's high quality video streaming encoding format presents a unique and complete solution for access to web-ready content, including text and media-rich interactive material, which is ideal for education applications; with this partnership, it can now be made available without the limitations imposed by the wired Internet infrastructure and the high cost of delivery platforms.
