Hello, Steve. Good points. We are told that we are dead in our sins. Spiritually a dead duck. We do not have the ability to revive ourselves as some teach. I have heard preachers use the analogy that we are drowning, and we are going down for the third (last) time when we cry out for forgiveness and God saves us. Not so. A dead man can not call out for anything. Salvation is a work of the Holy Spirit. God literally "drags us to repentance." This is why some are fooling themselves when they think they will get saved on a deathbed repentance. The fact is, they do not repent unless God chooses them at that moment.

Our "free will" in this case is not even considered. We do have free will to make decisions but our God is sovereign. God knows that we misuse our free will. I call that sin in action when we use our free will to go against God's will. But, it is my belief that we may take some sideroads but we still end up on the same destination that God has planned for us.
I always know when I am out of the sovereign will of the Father because I suffer pain until I am back in God's will for me.
But for his grace,

Santiago
