Introduction
A new generation of networking products has emerged for the specialized task of "Server Load Balancing" or Web Traffic Management. Examples of these devices are known as "Layer 4 switches" and Web switches. While they share some of the attributes of previous generation of LAN switches and routers that are designed to handle stateless or connection-oriented communications, Web switches are optimized to handle stateful, or connection oriented communications between Clients (browsers) and Web servers in an Internet or Intranet environment.
