ArrowPoint secures e-commerce transactions

LAS VEGAS - ArrowPoint Communications this week announced at Comdex that it has bolstered its Web switches with technologies designed to help companies offer more reliable e-commerce sites.

ArrowPoint sells switches that handle the traffic entering and emanating from Web servers. The company says its new technologies will minimize e-commerce transaction disruptions, such as lost electronic shopping carts or the disappearance of information from Web forms.

A technology called cookie switching is designed to ensure that Web site visitors are not suddenly switched from one server to another as a result of server load balancing. Such a switch could disrupt a transaction, according to ArrowPoint.

Another technology enables end users that have been disconnected from a Web site to reconnect to the same server supporting that site when dialing back in. Here's the problem this addresses: End users can get interrupted while completing a form for a secure transaction, as Web servers sometimes time out the Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) session, causing traditional load-balancing software to connect the user with a different server upon his return. Subsequently, all information in the user's form is lost and must be resubmitted. Sticky connections ensure that a user is reconnected to the original server and application data is not lost.

One other new technology, hybrid transaction binding, preserves "stickiness" when users move from cookie-based connections during browsing to SSL-based connections for purchasing. This technology permits sites to balance performance and security needs, and eliminate dropped shopping carts that cause service disruption and loss of customer goodwill.

The new technologies, available in an enhanced e-commerce content services suite, are available with ArrowPoint CS-100 and CS-800 Web switches as a free software maintenance upgrade.
