Ref:"In your watch allegory you failed to mention that the Swiss came
roaring back with the wildly successful SWATCH and now dominate
both the low-end and high-end of the watch market as completely,
if not more so, than they formerly did."

Duncan, this is off our main subject. But, no. I am quite sure that
the Swiss never recovered to dominate the watch industry again,
especially not the electronic watch industry.

One only has to walk to shopping mall or local stores to see the
varieties of watches made around the world. Only a few from
Switzerland.

The SWATCH? All my kids have owned one or two at sometimes
and we don't know where they all are, or if we still have them in the
house (the Swatches, I mean). I know where the expensive watches
are. The Swiss used to make all expensive watches in the world, but
not any more.

I have several other excellent examples of recent paradigm shifts.
One of my favorite examples is Federal Express. A graduate student 's
idea, scorned by his own professor and for a long time can't find any
financial backers or believers -- came to beat the mighty US Post Office
and UPS monopolies at their own game. And just overnight started up
an entire new industry. That's the power of a paradigm shift.
