Papua New Guinea pipeline: Government okays gas project environmental plan

PostCourier, January 28
THE Government has approved the environmental plan for the multi-billion
kina PNG to Queensland Gas project. Environment and Conservation
Minister Herowa Agiwa announced the approval in Port Moresby yesterday.

Mr Agiwa said the Government had approved the plan "based on the good work done
by the developer in carrying out a comprehensive environmental impact assessment
of the project'. Chevron said in a statement that the approval marked the
culmination of nearly two years of planning and consultation between them,
government departments and communities that will be affected by the project.
"While we would like to see the project proceed as quickly as possible, we are
also aware of our obligations to the environment,' PNG Gas Commercialisation
director Dr Moseley Moramoro said.

"This pipeline project must meet the high environment standards which Chevron
has set and maintained at its petroleum sites over the past 10 years in PNG,' Dr
Moramoro added. He said the extent of the approval for the PNG Gas project is to
carry out works including route preparation, construction and operation of the
gas pipeline, extension and operation of the Agogo facility and other
facilities.

Dr Moramoro said these works will be carried out according to the plans and
specifications outlined in the environmental plan, which has also been approved
by the Australian proponent of the project.
