you can try to talk to your broker beforehand and have some set aside, but no guarantees.

I trade QQQ options (mostly write).
or sometimes just long (usually in my IRA)
for short term swings (several days to several weeks)

I daytraded for a couple of years and found it too stressful for my tastes... fwiw, I started making much more (w/ a lot less stress) following the (longer) short and intermediate term swings and not playing all the minor ripples.
