NEW YORK (CBS.MW) -- S&P 500 futures took a dive on news that the U.S. economy is growing at a torrid pace and that wage inflation is picking up as a consequence.

The fourth-quarter employment cost index, the broadest measure of wage inflation, rose 1.1 percent in the fourth quarter, more than the expected increase of 0.8 percent. Within the number, wages and salaries rose 0.9 percent while benefits climbed 1.3 percent.

The advance reading of fourth-quarter gross domestic product, meanwhile, climbed 5.8 percent, more than the expected 5.0 percent rise. View economic calendar and forecasts and historical economic data

March S&P 500 futures slid 12.80 points and were trading about 10.30 points below fair value, according to HL Camp & Co., pointing to a sharply negative open for shares.

In the bond market, the long bond plunged after five straight sessions of hefty gains. But intermediate Treasurys were again the hardest hit by selling following this morning's strong data.

The 30-year Treasury bond tumbled 1 1/4 to yield 6.618 percent.
