I think that it's more like 6 years. I recall when, about 4 1/2 years ago, Siebel was in a dumpy office in Menlo Park and had about 20 people. The engineers had been at work about a year at that point, I think. A company like ARBA has been around maybe 1/2 that long. On the other hand, ORCL has probably at least 10,000 man-years of effort in their database product, and they work people pretty hard, too.

I'm not trying to say that the total number of years spent working on something is the most important measure, since MSFT has spent untold man-years on NT and it's terrible, but I'm inclined to think that in periods of flux in technology that people congeal around things that seem to work, and the biggest lump of fat is the one that wins. A lot of this b2b stuff has sprung up pretty quickly and it takes years of effort to build the kind of infrastructure that it seems to need, and the pure b2b plays don't seem to have had those man-years.
