Estephen, Europe currently uses GSM as the standard. Even the QCOM CDMA is being supplanted by the 'third generation,' or 'G3' standard which is just being finalized. Note that the patent position for the G3 standard is not resolved yet, so it's an open question as to whether QCOM can expect sizeable royalties; yet I wouldn't bet against them, and they are also developing their internet access system (HDR). Need to read more on that still.

Anyway, there's really no difference in the demands upon a cell from either GSM or CDMA phones, both use bursts of packetized digital information.

Telling you that the phone is GSM is just a hint that it's more likely to be used for European applications.
