calypso,

<< do you have any idea as to what QCOM might be doing with Certicom's ECC crypto? They recently licensed it >>

<< why Certicom didn't give more details about QCOM in their release is that, for competitive reasons, they weren't allowed. The main advantage ECC has over RSA in the smartcard arena,... is that it can be run on a much less expensive DSP smartcard. They cost a fraction of an RSA-capable chip.... it'll be interesting to see what QCOM has up their sleeves.

I just went up to the Certicom site to reread the press release on Qualcomm. It is linked here if anyone else is interested:

certicom.com

The teaser is:

"Certicom and QUALCOMM have agreed to release the details of the relationship in conjunction with QUALCOMM product announcement plans in the future."

There is a good whitepaper on the site called, "The Elliptic Curve Cryptosystem for Smart Cards".

certicom.com

I'm thinking that whatever Qualcomm is considering announcing for a product based on ECC may have nothing to do with a smart card or at least a SIM, since CDMA currently supports neither a SIM, a WIM (WAP Identity Module), or a general purpose smart card.

The Q could surprise me. A SIM (or as 3GPP2 calls it a R-UIM) is a long shot. Some variation of a WIM or smart card slotted phone from a Q handset partner that would accept a conventional transaction card for eCommerce is a possibility, but I suspect they might incorporate ECC into an ASIC for the handset rather than on a smart card at this stage.

Maybe they will surprise me.

<< QCOM and SCKT. ...neither one has been terribly funny of late. >>

QCOM will be back. LTB&H for me.
