For what it's worth, writing a operating system takes a whole set of different folks than the current employees at Netscape, who really are application maintenance types. It has been pointed out in this discussion that Netscape was invented at the super computer labs and Netscape took the developed system and has been adding enhancements at the user level. If they are going to develop the operating system and kernels for these internet appliances everyone is talking about, they will have to get some folks out of microsoft, apple, IBM DEC, etc. Note here that Gates hired folks from DEC to develop Windows NT.

I spent a number of years managing the development of Operating Systems as well as time developing applications. These two technologies are very different and require different skills.

Microsoft or Apple are in a better position to deliver these OS technologies. In fact Apple probably is in a better position than microsoft at this moment becuase of their experience with Newton, which is an appliance of sorts.

Sopme thoughts,
