Michael, the relative cost factor is only part of the equation, especially when one compares shipping cost vs. sales tax.

There are two other points that are perhaps more important. First, small business owners tend to be more comfortable dealing with a brick and mortar supply store (where they can return with no problem). It's simply a matter of convenience and past buying patterns. Second, consumers have a tendency to want instant gratification, not wait from 5 days to several weeks.
