From Page 212 of the February issue of Red Herring:

"One useful metric that's helped guide Lucent researchers is that for every 1 percent decrease in the price of bandwidth, there is a corresponding increase of 1.5 percent in demand. This means that as businesses invest in faster networks, there's a corresponding and predictable boost in revenues."

My reaction when I read this is that Nortel seemed to have realized this better than Lucent. If Nortel's acquisition of Qtera results in a lower cost for bandwidth because it reduces the need for regeneration, then there is an even greater increase in demand for the product. Likewise, if the Lucent MEMS product reduces the cost of bandwidth, there is an even greater increase in demand. The company with the best price/performance product wins the competition.
