GSM is the standard throughout the "old" European Community.
It is by far the largest share of the world market because of this uniformity, because of high market penetration, and relatively heavy use habits.
All of Europe, incl GB, and most of Asia going to 3-G by 2005 more or less.
Most observers argue Europe's adoption of a common standard is why smart cell phones offer so much more in Europe than we enjoy in North America.
But maybe it is culture. Who knows for sure.
