I've come to the conclusion that Tom W. is actually a mediaeval monk who adheres to the scholastic doctrine of the just price. And $8 is the just price for Corel, demmit, come hell or high water.

Maybe he's not really the Tom Watson of the punched card company, but Tom Aquinas.
