the volatility index is a measure of how relatively expensive options on the oex are. for example, the index closed at 29% tonight, up from 21% earlier in the week. this means that investors are paying up for puts for protection or speculation (calls are more expensive also) and, in theory, the put players are wrong. that is my understanding.
