Ouch. I have never seen a hedgehog. You're right about the Swastika. But I think the Indians were Anasazi, the symbols are mirror reversed, and the Anasazi one represents the four directions S W N E, and the movement of the day from East to West. A very positive symbol, to them.
In Altadena, California, where I grew up, a boxwood garden hedge and pond survived from the twenties in a wealthy house's backyard; inspired by the earlier use. At the first time I saw it, with an older friend, I had no knowledge it was earlier a positive American symbol. I was a little freaked, but he knew about it, so I learned something.
During the War, I read a Navajo saying, "It is no wonder it is the sign of demons. The day is spinning backwards."
At least, that's what I remember.
And the symbol is hundreds of years old, but I can't remember the first use. Around 1100 AD, or something. |
