Hi Mike. You bring up several good issues:

1) As far as Asia...there is virtually no competition for Xilinx in the programmable logic arena. I believe the concern here would be for the more commodity-oriented ASIC --- not the FPGA, as it is driven by design software as well as patents.

2) As far as "system on a chip"; the likelihood is actually the converse of what you suggest. The FPGA device could eventually completely supplant the ASIC -- but I can't see things happening the other way around for certain "techno-economic" reasons. In this case, LSI and VLSI could fall by the wayside against programmable logic devices.
