I'm not denying that bricks and mortar companies can have advantages. But I do want to point out that so far very few bricks and mortar companies have really had the vision to GET it, if you know what I mean. For example, Toys R Us let's customers order out of stock items, then the customer is suprised when they don't arrive when expected. Then since no email record of the transaction is forthcoming in a timely manner, the customer try's to cancel an order and finds that to be a nightmare. Etoys on the other hand is a hasslefree experience.

Another example is how Amazon has whipped the pants off of Barnes & Noble. Sometimes the legacy of bricks and mortar seems to trip up those companies. I don't know why. Maybe it's because they have stodgy leadership. But the best bet is the go with the demonstrated leader. So far that is Etoys. As soon as Toys R Us surpasses Etoys in sales and customer satisfaction, then I'm with you. Until then, I'll take first mover advantage any day.

PS Ask yourself why companies like Cisco are worth more than companies like Lucent and you'll get closer to why I'm thinking the way I do. Some get it, some don't. Being in the right industry at the right time isn't the only thing a company needs to be successful.
