An overview of the fiber optic backbone.

Important to note is that @home is finally making an attempt to promote the backbone as one of the @home advantages. I've long wondered why they have been so silent about it.

Some things I learned:

True Physical Redundancy
Each serviceable market has at least two physically diverse network paths coming in and out. This ensures that @Work customers in a given region maintain the same high levels of service if a route to that region should fail.

...

Broadband VPNs
Due to the added capacity of the new Excite@Home backbone, @Work can provide segregated and managed bandwidth for businesses looking for private network performance -- OC-3 (155Mbps) levels and above -- at public network rates.

...

Another advantage of the new Excite@Home backbone is the strength of the Points of Presence (POPs) that hold the fiber system. All POPs feature 48-volt DC power, generator backup, restricted access, air conditioning, and 24 x 7 surveillance to protect the fiber system, as well as provide quick disaster recovery. All @Work termination points (routers) will reside in these robust, carrier-class POPs, and connect directly to the fiber system.

...

This direct connection to the fiber system also allows @Work to simplify its network configuration by removing superfluous routers, ATM switches, and expensive SONET add/drop multiplexors.

And the final plug--

The bottom line is that the new Excite@Home backbone gives @Work customers access to a simplified and mature network capable of delivering unsurpassed throughput, flexibility, security, and reliability. Coupled with @Work's focus on end-to-end management and proactive 24 x 7 network monitoring, this network makes @Work a leading provider of high-performance, fault tolerant IP services.
