Would like your perspective on the following......
taken from SSB Dec. 6 report on Computer storage.........

SAN Management

Who controls the data traffic in a SAN? The most popular answer we have heard is "me." Everyone want to control the SAN. If SANs are going to be as great as everyone thinks they will (and we agree), the most value will be added by whoever controls it.

In our view, there are four viable contestants:

1. Application servers:............too expensive..

2. Storage Subsystems:...... tail wagging the dog......

3.Dedicated server..thin server in the middle of the SAN....viable short-and long term solution.

4. Switches: To us this seems like the most natural solution, although it will be at least 18 months before we expect to see switches that are robust enough to effectively manage a SAN (EMCs Connectrix comes the closest). If a switch was beefed up by adding various software and hardwaare features and functions, we believe a switch would be a very efficient SAN manager.

Now I can see why directors are going to be broken out in revenue figures in future Qs. They are different than the other switches. SSB has done some real impressive homework on storage. On the cc call they asked about directors and about future extentions onto the director platform. The phrase "data pump cards" comes to mind. Perhaps the above info puts it in perspective?

Its easy to see why SAN managers may always be more expensive, higher margin items, and would take some work B4 being ready to sell.

Open Q- What Hardware/software would ANCR add to enable this?
Will this be a fork in the road for SUNW approach vs. EMCs? SUNW going with server SAN management and EMC with director SAN managers?

Director switches appear to be VERY important beyond the cabling and port density reasons? The most value added.

ANCR what is this 18 month stuff-can you shave some months from this?
