John, we're wired coast to coast in Europe. In the UK especially, we have so much dark fiber in the ground that most of it is lying unused.

You see, there are so many of us crammed into a small space compared to the US that it is relatively easy to get "wired". Same goes for wireless with 4 networks that each on their own cover 98% of the UK population. The four are Cellnet (British Telecom), Vodafone, Orange (Mannesman) & One2One (Cable & Wireless). Vodafone & Cellnet are GSM, the other 2 are not. I think there are something like 22 million cellphone users in the UK (out of a population of 58 million).

Where I live (small market town right in the middle of England, not far from Bill Shakespeare), I can have cellphone on any of the 4 networks, cable phone, British Telecom copperpair phone or Mercury (Cable & Wireless) copperpair phone. ADSL is just being rolled out in some cities (not here) and no cable company that I have spoken to seems to know what a cable modem is.

The Nokia WAP phones have just become available in the shops, not sure if there is any content available for them yet.
