RE:"The PC market doesn't seem to be as hot as everyone would have us believe -- see CPQ & DELL. Isn't MSFT vulnerable here as well? "

Compaq already took it's lumps and is recovery mode. Dells problems are the result of higher component costs and following Intel down a black hole. In reality, supply couldn't keep up with demand in Q4.
Intel's year over year Q4 increase in chip sales was up only 3% but not because of lack of demand but because of Intel screw ups. They will work it out. Gateway ordered wrong and Intel didn't help them.
Through all this, regardless of which sector of the PC industry is strong, low, middle or high, all PCs need an operating system.
HP on the other hand, did order right and will have a strong Q.
For many years wall street has called for the cyclicality of the computer business. Hasn't happened...won't happen...bar some major recession, depression. Biggest cloud on Microsoft is a bunch of government Lawyers who would just love to "get something" on Bill Gates. Biggest plus is the upcoming Windows 2K product cycle. Windows is a very different product than the legacy burdened Win 95-98 series.
Probably not a great upgrade for those but a great original install.
I will have one of the first copies...
