good deals...Mobile Wireless Internet Trading Machine

Thanks, Good deals are appreciated. I spent a little time looking at the Palm VII as it has a built in modem. I am trying to set up a mobile wireless trading system.

I checked into the RIM pager as well as the PALM VII.

I am now leaning towards a laptop...did I say laptop?<g>...had one years ago and did not like it....BUT what is one to do if mobile Internet access is needed?

It looks like the laptop solution is cheaper and more capable than the small hand helds...I would like a RIM pager with unlimited real time quotes but $140/month is too pricey IMO.

If things go as planned Metricom mcomlinks.homestead.com will have the 128k mobile wireless system in my area sometime this summer.

So..I pass on DSL and cable and opt for mobile wireless..albeit slower..(but 2 X my existing 56k service)..the advantage is I can plug it into my home machine and then take it with me to use with a laptop. Future plans are for faster service....but we are a here and now thread...well almost now..future vaporware is for investors to think about.

No prices yet. Their existing 28k wireless is $29? +/-. I have seen guesses for the new 128k service between $40 and $100 for unlimited always connected service. My guess is the lower end because they need to grab market share quickly.

So..$24 for streaming quotes in my DLJdirect account and $50 for unlimited mobile wireless ISP..I have unlimited realtime quotes and trading for $75...vs $140 for just unlimited quotes and alerts with the RIM pager.

Well..I need the hardware too. I have started the painful search for a laptop. The Metricom Ricochet 2 modem will work in a serial port or USB. Better speed with USB so I figure Win98 on the laptop. When I plug the modem into the home machine it will be in the serial port for now as the home machines are Win95 and NT...no USB yet...never really liked it but the choice is being made for me:(

Best deal on a laptop?? min 64 MB ram and 4 gig harddrive...processor?? I don't want to go overboard. I have at least until June to decide as the wireless service is not yet available. $1200 12 inch Toshiba...2105CDS..400MHz AMD® K6 64MB RAM and 4 gig HD csd.toshiba.com

I checked some other big names..DELL..Gateway...It seems their 64 MB machines are north of $2000.
