Hi Dennis:

Here is some (dated) information on the S-DMT proposal.
It was developed by Krista Jacobsen, an engineer
at Amati communications (now part of TXN), and a
former PhD student of John Cioffi at Stanford.

Jacobsen, Bingham and Cioffi presented a paper
entitled ``Synchronized DMT for multipoint to point
communications on HFC networks' at the IEEE
Globecom 95.

Unfortunately Amati and TXN focused on DSL technology,
and ultimately it was a small company called
Ultracom which pushed S-DMT. Its web site is still
up: ultracominc.com However, the company
has probably gone under.

For detailed comparisons of QAM against S-CDMA and
S-DMT, you may wish to look at:

cedmagazine.com

cedmagazine.com

cedmagazine.com

When the Hi-PHY standard was discussed, Broadcom
was lined up behind QAM, TERN behind S-CDMA, and
S-DMT lacked a truly strong sponsor. My
cynical view is that BRCM made sure that the
truly threatening technical option was killed,
which guaranteed its dominance of the cable
modem chip business for a long time.

Best regards,

Bernard Levy

PS: S-DMT has of course been selected by the ITU
for VDSL. The recent book by John Bingham on
ADSL, VDSL and multicarrier modulation covers
the technology in a DSL context.
