Read one of the recent books on the Shroud of Turin and you'll see where we get the traditional image of Jesus. It seems as if that cloth was featured in a Byzantine church long before it made its way to Turin, probably during the last of the Crusades. The image can be traced back to maybe the 800s, it shows up on some old coins.
