Now this begins to hint at an situation where the embedded OS creates an common environment where new systems fit best if they all use the same OS. While functions such as transferring a photo from camera to printer would probably be handled by standard protocols, more complex interactions between devices may develop in the future, in which functions of the embedded OS becomes more critical. I'm not sure what those interactions might be, but if such a thing ever came to pass it could constitute a powerful lock on the market for the OS vendor.

Anyway, that's the kind of lock I'd like to see an embedded OS vendor have, but I don't think it's going to happen any time soon.
