AMD-760/770 Delayed Until 2001 (AMD) Posted By Brian Neal Friday, January 28, 2000 - 5:27:01 PM Thanks to Chris at AMD Zone for sending me this link. It would appear that although VIA has an agressive Athlon chipset roadmap that adequately covers the low-end and mid-range markets, AMD's high-end 760 and 770 chipsets have been put off until next year. Though VIA's chipsets, with features like integrated video and PC266-DDR SDRAM, should be sufficient for many users, they will not support multiple processors. This is where AMD's 760/770 chipsets come in, sporting features like a 266 MHz bus, LDT, DDR, and ATA-100.
Delays in AMD's multiprocessor chipsets are likely due to a number of factors, and there have been some problems with the design team. However, without these chipsets, there will be no SMP Athlon systems until 2001 (when the chipsets become available). This opens up a huge window of opportunity for Intel, who has been supplying processors for multiprocessor x86 workstation manufacturers like Compaq, HP, Dell, and Intergraph for years. Despite Intel's recent supply problems, it is unlikely AMD will make any significant penetration into this market (and its products like the Proliant and X-Class series) until SMP support exists. |
