Gary,
Now, Microsoft has CE which has failed and IE which is a good "full blown browser" to use your words. I think Microsoft (if they cared) have the tools to build a leapfrog product. I don't disagree that CE has failed and that IE is too large and cumbersome, but Microsoft has all the neccessary tools to build a device that customers of handhelds will want - don't you think???
Yes, can't argue against your statement above. The question is how big this customer base is. No doubt that the Casio PDA has been successful, but it has limited itself to a niche market, while the Palm has appealed to the general market. At this stage of the competition, Microsoft can, best, by integrating successful Palm ingredients into CE. While this is an arguable statement in itself, let's assume that this is true. All performance and user interface being even, CE has some obstacles. The biggest is application developers. Palm has A LOT MORE developers than CE; this alone means that CE CANNOT compete against Palm. There are many other reasons why CE can't compete against Palm, but the reason stated above is strong enough for Palm to fend off CE.
