Yes, it was extended not long ago (1996) - and it used to be from the date of granting, now it's the date of filing. The law was changed to get rid of "submerged" patents, where companies would keep patents applications pending in the Patent Office for years, so as to get as long as possible. Patent applications are confidential, the information isn't available to the public until they are granted, so companies could have their cake and eat it, too. Now, with the term commencing on the filing date, there's no incentive to do that anymore.
