Andrew, You're only Imagining that Ferret...you see a Ferret in your 'Mind's Eye'.
This is called 'CompensatoryFurrProjection', or CFP.
Any repressed or misdirected longings and lingering unfulfilled Pagliotic desires are stimulated by the Vision of The Ferret, which pops up it's head at unexpected and often inconvenient times.
For some, CFP is 100% controllable with medication...others with severe cases achieve mild relief from their CFP with subcortical deprivation, although side effects can become didactic.
Only the Most Acute cases of CFP require Institutionalization.
Studies have found that those suffering with the Disease often have no solution or relief.
CFP can be episodic or chronic.
