Eric, thanks for your help--The equation is wild-- pretty soon I'll try to lay out basic structure as it stands. The GSM/RSA connection evolves necessarily from coexisting techs, but Datakey has just hybridized RSA/ECC on its state of the art 330 card while724 brings ECC into the limelight. RSA going off patent lowers costs, but the stakes are too high to compromise the security. People remain cognizant of the $50. limit but fearful of fraudulent use of credit cards, which is easy. Business has experienced loss incurred by hacked data and broken confidence. Web stories concerning high and low level harvesting (legal and not) and use of personal information are rampant. (Have you checked out and subscribed to the Crypto-gram newsletter?-- really brilliant, current and transcendant of paranoia).American Ex is working the cultural and tech changes now and will do great, I think. Less expensive computing power on cards will increase four-fold allowing superb encryption, and ECC would seem to be the logical choice for compact strength and low power consumption in all constrained environments, but pride and politics within the purely competitive schemes confuse the issues. Industry consolidation would be a plus. I like the power and momentum of TCPA. I'd like to see Sun, EDS and Sonera listed. If the standards acxcording to the best technologies are set without ridiculous delay, the movement will be terrific-- industries and consumers thrive on clarity. |
