It doesn't shock me. When they pulled up after the finish MTR looked like he had enough. The other one was still full of run.

I think it's a real bad idea to get into a battle like that in your first race after a long layoff. I'm not a vet, but it's known by handicappers that a lot of horses get muscle tied or have some other adverse reaction to it. Sort of like me going to the basketball court after drinking beer for six months and immediately trying to run full court. I'm sore just thinking about it.
