Allow me to introduce myself, My name is Alan Hume, I'm an Englishman and live in Germany for the last 30 years. I have been lurking this thread since reading about it at the beginning of this year, when someone voted it as one of the best sites on SI.

I have a strange problem with my computer, and maybe one of you gurus out there can advise me.
I recently installed a new sound card: a Creative Labs Sound Blaster 16 PCI. To get it to function after installation, I had to apply a "4 in 1" patch (Apparantly sound Blasters cause a conflict with the interrupts if one has an AMD K2 processor and a VIA chipset).
Ok the patch fixed the problem, but now the CDROM drive has gone on strike. Any attempt to use it results in "Major system error" message.
I suspect that the fault may be in the new cable that was required to link the CDROM drive with the sound card (the plug of the old one wasn't compatible at the sound card end)

An ideas anyone?

Alan
