Would transmission speeds of 2.5 Gbits/s be sufficient to carry live video and audio (smoothly) over the internet??

2.5Gbps can carry roughly 250 high quality video channels. Maybe 500 or even 1000 with serious compression.

Thats the best way to answer "how fast is it" that I can think of.

Its pretty fast, but would be used up easily when (not if) people use it for movies, TV, videophone etc.
