Intel Mismanaged Opportunities w/ Flash?
John: I am writing you in hopes you or others may provide insight into what appears to be a conspicuous anomaly and disappointment in Intel's management history. I believe Intel long has had the largest market share in the production of flash memory (albeit nowhere like the dominance for CPUs). Despite this position and Intel's tremendous marketing and manufacturing might, Intel appears to be nonexistent in the branding and development of flash memory from the consumer's point of view. In fact, the flash card operations were sold to Centennial for peanuts some time back.
At the present time, the flash market has been red hot. New apps and devices using SmartMedia and CompactFlash (CF)such as digital cameras (Best Buy, Computer City virtually sold out for four months running!), MP3 players (>20 diff. models available), WindowsCE devices have created such tremendous demand that is growing exponentially. Yet, Intel is conspicuously absent! It appears that Intel could be missing not just an golden opportunity to establish Intel-branded flash as the flash memory of choice in this explosively growing field, with the following benefits: 1. new revenue streams 2. climbing higher on the revenue chain 3. help suppressing AMD's efforts. At the very least, Intel could be weighing in on establishing new standards...e.g. CF vs. smartmedia....or at least investing in some of the intriguing companies that are profiting tremendously from this new market, e.g. Sandisk. Could you not make a case for Intel's investing substantially in these efforts? Could the fund that you now manage help spearhead some of these efforts?
