Compaq CEO sees 40 percent direct sales in 2000
HOUSTON , Jan 12 (Reuters) - Michael Capellas, president and chief executive of Compaq Computer Corp. (NYSE: CPQ), said on Wednesday he expected the share of Compaq computers sold directly to customers to rise to a targeted rate of 40 percent this year from a current 25 percent.

Capellas said he saw rapid benefits emerging from the recently announced $370 million purchase of assets from computer distributor Inacom Corp. (NYSE: ICO) , a move seen as boosting Compaq's ability to sell personal computers directly to customers like its archrival Dell Computer Corp. (NASDAQ: DELL) does.

"We think we can have volume through there (Inacom) in about six weeks. This is going to bring benefits...You won't see any effect in the first quarter, but you'll see the volume kick up really fast," Capellas said, after giving a speech in Houston.

Asked if this meant the 40 percent direct sales goal would be attained this year, he answered, "Yes".

Capellas clarified that he meant a 40 percent direct sales run rate by the end of the year, not an average for the whole year. Direct sales refer to those made by Internet or phone to customers, as opposed to sales made through retail stores or other distributors.

Houston-based Compaq remains the world's no. 1 maker of personal computers but was edged out of the top slot in the United States last year by fast-growing rival Dell, which is seen as a master of direct sales.
