Jim, Japan still suffers from Japanesitis [a belief in their superiority and the importance of keeping it in the family]. But they are making serious moves to internationalize and are likely to do very well at it.

The USA is telling them to open their markets. They are doing this slowly. It will benefit Japan and they will do even better than they have. Meanwhile, in the USA, which is not the free market many think it is, there are still trade restrictions to protect uneconomic producers at taxpayer's expense.

But as far as I know the Japanese recognize intellectual property rights. They are contracting with Qualcomm for CDMA licences. China has been less particular about intellectual property if not downright kleptomaniac. Perversely, this is not always bad. It is very lucky for IBM and Microsoft that there was massive cloning of IBM PCs and illegal copying of MS DOS etc. It left Apple in the dust. Now that everyone is hooked on Intel and Microsoft, they can rake in the billions while Apple wonders where the next rot will break out.

So funny that Microsoft and IBM were desperately trying to stop cloning and copying. Lucky for them they couldn't. Qualcomm has got the good sense to give away a Eudora Light and sell the good one. But even if there is pretty extensive theft of Eudora Pro, it doesn't matter too much as it hooks more people. Qualcomm has almost given away CDMA too, with very cheap licences [but Ericsson can pay big since they were so slow - CDMA can't be sunk now so they aren't needed], but if Qualcomm are superior manufacturers and do excellent further R&D, then they will still get a big market share.

Roll out the Q-Phone, we'll have a barrel of fun!
